Vibal Quincentenario Portal
It was in 1521 when the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, on a mission for King Charles I of Spain, set foot on Philippine shores. His fleet, known as Armada de Molucca, had come blazing through uncharted oceans in search of the legendary Islands of Spices, which would bring wealth and glory for the kingdom of Spain.
Magellan and his men stayed for a week in Limasawa, where the first Mass in the country was held, marking the birth of Christianity in the Philippines. The expedition continued and they reached an island we know today as Cebu with the guidance of Rajah Kolambu. The chieftain of Cebu island, Rajah Humabon, entered an alliance with the Europeans and agreed to be baptized along with eight hundred natives. Magellan also gave them an image of the Sto. Niño.
Magellan came to the island of Mactan on 27 April 1521 to take arms against the local chief, Lapulapu. Lapulapu’s warriors met Magellan and his troops in a bloody battle that ended in the explorer’s demise. This has been marked as the first documented victory of native Filipinos over European invaders.
Today, as we commemorate the five hundredth anniversary of the Victory at Mactan, we remember the people, places, and events of the Filipino-Spanish interactions that helped shape the Philippines as we know it today.
